(St. John\u2019s, NL) On June 2nd, the East Coast Trail Association will be awarded a Senate of
\nCanada Sesquicentennial Medal by Senator David Wells. The medal recognizes Canadians
\nwhose generosity, dedication, volunteerism and hard work make their communities a better place to live. Senator Wells will present the award to the ECTA at its annual fundraising hike, Trail Raiser 2018, on Saturday, June 2 in Petty Harbour.<\/p>\n

Senator Wells is pleased to recognize the important work of the ECTA with the medal.
\nHe said, \u201cFor many years now I have seen first-hand the countless hours spent by ECTA
\nvolunteers and staff grooming and preparing the trail so its natural beauty can be shared with
\ncommunity members and tourists alike. The Canadians powering this hardworking and selfless
\norganization deserve to be commemorated for their contributions to community and country.\u201d
\nRandy Murphy, President of the ECTA, will accept the honour on behalf of the association. He
\nwas humbled by the recognition and felt it was a testament to the work of the many volunteers that have dedicated their time over the nearly 25 year history of the ECTA.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cThis award is an acknowledgement for everyone who has contributed to the East Coast Trail Association over the years. It started as a few people who recognized that we have
\nsomething worth developing, protecting and sharing. People have been very generous in their
\nsupport, giving their time, skills, professional expertise, and use of family land. They\u2019ve fundraised and have worked to gain the support of the business community and government. This award really recognizes that collective effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

The presentation will happen during the ECTA\u2019s largest fundraiser of the year, Trail Raiser 2018. The hike will involve over 400 trail supporters and aims to raise $75,000 to help preserve and protect the East Coast Trail.<\/p>\n

The Senate of Canada Sesquicentenntial Medal commemorates the 150th anniversary of the
\nSenate of Canada\u2019s first sitting on November 6, 1867. It features the Senate\u2019s emblem on one
\nside and the Senate Chamber, along with the recipient\u2019s name, on the other. The awards are
\nbased on nominations by senators. The purpose of the program is to commemorate individuals or organizations that have contributed immensely to Canada, but whose contributions often go
\nunnoticed.<\/p>\n
