Association President Randy Murphy says corporate and citizen donations exceeded expectations for the event which heralded the opening of the newly named Cobbler Path. Officially opening the newest path, located within the community of Logy Bay-Middle-Cove-Outer Cove was an opportunity to publicly thank our supporters from three levels of government and the many business who continue to support the trail, said Murphy, but also highlighted the fact that citizens and the business community strongly appreciate the strength and comfort one gets from walking along the coastline with family and friends, and as such, are continuing to support the efforts to keep our coastline accessible by all.

The 10Th annual Tely Hike was held to coincide with the Official Opening of Cobbler Path, formally known as Red Cliff Path. This year the Association celebrated International Trails Day for the first time – this year’s celebration, which was held at the Justina Centre in Logy Bay-Middle-Cove-Outer Cove, raised $12,840 in hiker donations and $91,400 from corporate sources, for a total of $104,240. The top fundraising team of ten, High Maintenance Maniacs, raised $3,548.25, and received prizes of a morning of kayaking in Cape Broyle donated by Stan Cook Kayaking and a picnic lunch in Ferryland, donated by Light House Picnics. The runner up team, Nalcor, raised $1344 and won prizes donated by both Pretty Save Enterprises and the East Coast Trail Association; they won first aid kits and an ECTA Guide Book.

The Cobbler Path is one of more than 20 paths built, maintained and promoted by the East Coast Trail Association, a volunteer driven, registered charity. Cobbler Path covers more than 6.5 kilometers of coastline between Doran’s Lane in Outer Cove and Red Cliff Road. Funding from the Government of Canada, through ACOA, and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador made the completion of Cobbler Path possible.

The East Coast Trail Association thanks all the sponsors of the event, the hikers and volunteers who contribute their time to ensure the East Coast Trail remains a prime recreational and tourist attraction.
