{"id":9732,"date":"2013-11-01T16:48:36","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T16:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eastcoasttrail.com\/?p=9732"},"modified":"2023-07-21T13:42:44","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T13:42:44","slug":"canada-world-youth-lends-a-hand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eastcoasttrail.com\/canada-world-youth-lends-a-hand\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada World Youth lends a Hand"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Canada World Youth lends a Hand<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Sunday, November 10, 2013<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sugarloaf hikers and Robin Hood Bay are the immediate beneficiaries of yesterday&#8217;s 20 hours of labour donated by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ten international youth volunteers with Canada World Youth \/ Jeunesse Canada Monde.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Approximately 18 large bags of plastic sheeting, styrofoam, plastic bags, and other non-organic packaging materials mostly, were recovered from alongside Sugarloaf Path down wind of the Robin Hood Bay Landfill, in and under the trees lining our trail.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The visiting Canada World Youth team consists of 9 Canadians and 9 Ghanaians between the ages of 18-24. Saturday&#8217;s participants derived from Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and from Ghana. After hiking north from Quidi Vidi, these energetic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">young adults cheerfully got into our trash for two hours of serious clean up, with bits of sing-along on the side. Two hours and a noticeable impact, and the group carried on to the Ocean Sciences Centre and Logy Bay, completing their Sugarloaf Path hike before dusk.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Canada World Youth works in partnership with experienced local organizations towards sustainable health and environmental programs while forging global friendships and the construction of social capital. CWY has been around over forty years and has partnered in over sixty countries.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our visiting Canada World Youth group heads to Ghana next month to volunteer on several sustainability projects there for three months.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They plan a fund raiser for Friday, November 29 at St. James United Church, 330 Elizabeth Avenue with music, dance, snacks, silent auction, fashion, raffle and more.
